Crew compliance costs
Before starting an assignment with P&O Cruises, crew have to pay upfront costs for essential compliance documents and training (VISAs, STCW course etc). P&O Cruises cover most of these costs and they will be refunded once an assignment begins. You may also need to cover the cost of personal travel documents, like your passport.
Remember, you will never be charged a placement or recruitment process fee. If anyone asks you to pay for this, they are not an approved hiring partner of P&O Cruises – do not use them.
Training compliance – STCW requirement
STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping. It is a worldwide convention that ensures a lateral standard of training is achieved across all countries in the world.
For new hires, this is a Carnival Corporation pre-requisite. However, it is not required for all roles on board – your resourcing and onboarding consultant will confirm whether you need to obtain STCW Training during your recruitment journey.
The average cost of training in the UK (Basic Safety Training) is estimated at £818.12. Please note that this cost may vary based on the country in which the course is undertaken. Course lengths vary based on the course as well as country in which the course is undertaken. EG Basic Safety Training (4 elements) in the UK is 5 days long, in South Africa it is up to 15 days & Mauritius is 16 days.
Some of the refresher elements may only be a day or two, so depends on what elements need to be obtained. We are able to support with any queries surrounding this.
STCW course detail
- Personal survival techniques – Give students the skills to survive at sea in the event of abandoning ship. This includes theoretical and pool based practical sessions using a life raft, immersion suit, life jacket and other survival equipment.
- Fire prevention & fire fighting – Using purpose built facilities, they replicate conditions on-board which require students to extinguish fires and rescue casualties using breathing apparatus and firefighting equipment.
- Elementary first aid – Students will receive the knowledge and understanding of first aid techniques with use of practical training session and presentations.
- Personal safety and social responsibility – Course is designed to give students knowledge of safety practices, pollution prevention responsibilities, life and culture on board a vessel.
- Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats – Often in the classroom as well as water facility, students are required to undertake practical drills in handling inflatable rescue boats, life boats and life rafts.
