Supporting coastal safety education in Southampton

P&O Cruises and sister-brand Cunard have announced a new partnership with Sea Sense, Tide School’s coastal safety and ocean education programme for children.

The partnership will support eight schools across Southampton over the next two years, including schools in the Southampton Test and Southampton Itchen constituencies.

“We are incredibly proud of our connection with Southampton and supporting coastal communities is hugely important to us – this partnership with Sea Sense is a meaningful way to help young people build both confidence and respect for the ocean. Through practical education and hands-on activities, Sea Sense is giving children vital knowledge that can help keep them safe while also inspiring the next generation of sea-faring advocates. We are proud to support the programme in Southampton and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have across local schools and communities.”
Carnival UK & P&O Cruises president, Paul Ludlow

Sea Sense helps children understand how the sea works and how to stay safe around the coast. The programme focuses on five key elements: tides, currents, winds, waves and rip currents. Through practical lessons and real-life scenarios, pupils build confidence and awareness before they encounter risks near the water.

As part of the programme, children will also take part in monthly Sea Guardian activities. These focus on ocean conservation, responsible behaviour at the coast and simple actions that help protect the marine environment. Activities include beach cleans and local environmental projects.

Colleagues from P&O Cruises and Cunard will support Sea Sense and local schools through community beach clean initiatives. This builds on existing volunteering activity, which already contributes data to the Marine Conservation Society’s annual beach litter report.

“This partnership means a huge amount for Sea Sense. With P&O Cruises and Cunard’s support, we can help children understand the sea, stay safer around the coast and develop a stronger sense of responsibility for protecting our ocean environment. It is exactly the kind of early education that can create safer, more caring coastal communities.”
William Thomson, Head of Tide School
“I strongly welcome this valuable partnership between P&O Cruises, Cunard and Sea Sense to deliver practical water safety and environmental education in local schools. I have been campaigning for stronger water safety education in every school, so that every child understands the risks around open water and knows what to do in an emergency. I am particularly pleased that this initiative links directly to my work to clean up and protect our local waters, including the River Itchen, and to connect schools with Southampton’s maritime strengths. It demonstrates another important benefit the cruise industry brings to our city, supporting jobs and our economy, while investing in our communities and the next generation too.”
Darren Paffey, MP for Southampton Itchen
“I’m pleased to hear of P&O Cruises and Cunard's new partnership with Sea Sense and the impact it will have raising coastal awareness though practical education and hands-on Sea Guardian activities. The presence of P&O Cruises and Cunard – and the cruise sector – play a valuable role in the local community and I look forward to seeing the positive impact this partnership will have with schools in the local community.”
