We’re proud to celebrate Engineer Cadet Seren Nix, who has been shortlisted for Cadet of the Year at the Maritime Solent Awards 2026.

The achievement is particularly significant as the quality of nominations received this year led Maritime Solent to introduce separate Cadet of the Year and Apprentice of the Year categories for the first time, recognising the exceptional talent emerging across the maritime sector

A journey of growth and achievement

Seren has completed her engineering cadetship with sea phases on board P&O Cruises and Cunard ships, and ashore at Warsash Maritime School, combining academic study with practical experience at sea as she worked towards qualifying as an Engineering Officer of the Watch.

During her cadetship, Seren gained experience on board both Aurora and Queen Elizabeth, where she has impressed colleagues with her professionalism, determination and commitment to learning. From engine room maintenance and machinery overhauls to watchkeeping and operational activities, she has consistently embraced opportunities to develop her skills and broaden her experience.

Her shipboard managers praised her ability to adapt quickly, contribute confidently within engineering teams and take on responsibilities beyond those typically expected at her stage of training. During a later sea phase, she completed key elements of her training ahead of schedule, allowing her to focus on learning the role of a future Third Engineer.

Inspiring future talent

Alongside her technical achievements, Seren has become a passionate ambassador for the maritime industry.

She has represented maritime careers at a House of Commons reception, participated in cadet experience panels, supported the opening of Warsash Maritime School’s SMART Centre and actively contributed to activities that promote opportunities within the industry.

Her commitment to sharing her experiences is helping more young people understand the rewarding opportunities available at sea, particularly within marine engineering. Through her outreach work and visibility within the sector, Seren is helping inspire the next generation of maritime professionals.

A future engineering officer to watch

Seren’s place among this year’s finalists reflects not only her academic and professional achievements, but also the positive impact she has had on colleagues, fellow cadets and the wider maritime community. Her appraisals have consistently highlighted her strong work ethic, positive attitude and leadership potential.

Everyone at P&O Cruises congratulates Seren on this fantastic achievement and wishes her the very best of luck at the Maritime Solent Awards 2026.
