Behind every successful voyage is a team of dedicated professionals whose leadership, expertise and commitment help create unforgettable experiences at sea. One of those people is Martel Fursdon, Staff Captain, who has been awarded the prestigious Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service.

The award recognises Martel’s exceptional contribution to the maritime industry, including her commitment to safety, mentorship, inclusion and the development of future seafarers. Her achievement is not only a personal milestone but also a powerful example of the opportunities and impact that can come with a career at sea.

A prestigious honour for a maritime leader

The Merchant Navy Medal is one of the highest honours in the UK maritime sector, recognising individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service, dedication and leadership.

Martel has spent more than four years with Carnival UK aboard both P&O Cruises and Cunard ships. Alongside her operational responsibilities, she has built a reputation as a passionate advocate for developing talent and supporting colleagues throughout their careers.

Before joining Carnival UK, Martel became the first female Captain in The Lundy Company’s history. Throughout her maritime career, she has continued to challenge barriers, champion positive change and help create opportunities for others entering the industry.

Her contribution extends beyond her day-to-day role. She has supported safety improvements across multiple vessels, helped build mentoring networks and played an important role in the repatriation of stranded seafarers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I'm incredibly touched, honoured, and still somewhat in disbelief to be awarded the Merchant Navy Medal. It has always stood for service, dedication and commitment, often carried out quietly and away from the public eye, so to receive this recognition is humbling.
"As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, this means even more to me. I hope it shows that hard work and determination can open doors once thought closed, and if it inspires even one young woman to believe she belongs in this industry, I'll be incredibly proud."
Martel, Staff Captain

Supporting the next generation at sea

One of the achievements that contributed to Martel receiving this honour is her dedication to developing future maritime talent.

Throughout her career, she has mentored cadets and officers, helping them build confidence, develop their skills and progress into leadership positions. She continues to support colleagues who are starting their journey in the maritime industry, sharing her experience and encouraging them to achieve their ambitions.

Her work reflects the belief that successful careers at sea are built not only through technical expertise, but also through guidance, support and the willingness to help others succeed.

For people considering cruise ship careers, stories like Martel’s demonstrate the many opportunities available to learn, grow and develop professionally while working on board world-class ships.

Creating a more inclusive maritime industry

Martel has also been recognised for her work supporting women in maritime and helping to create a more inclusive environment at sea.

Through her involvement with the Women’s Officer Network and her mentorship of female officers, she has helped create stronger support systems for women progressing through leadership roles within the industry.

Her story highlights how representation and visibility can inspire future generations to pursue careers they may never have previously considered.
