Working on board

What skills do I need to work in shore experiences or cruise sales on a cruise ship?

To succeed in shore experiences or cruise sales on board a P&O Cruises ship, you’ll need strong customer service skills, confidence when speaking with guests, and the ability to stay calm, organised and professional in a fast‑paced ship environment.

Both roles require clear communication, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to supporting guests. Shore experiences roles benefit from problem‑solving skills and an interest in destinations, while sales roles suit people who enjoy building rapport and recommending the right holiday options.

Do I need previous sales, tourism or hospitality experience to apply?

Previous experience in sales, tourism, retail, call centres or hospitality is helpful, but not essential. We value transferable skills such as communication, organisation and guest care. Many people join a P&O Cruises ship with no previous cruise experience.

Are formal qualifications required for these cruise ship roles?

Formal qualifications aren’t always required. Instead, we look for strong literacy and numeracy, a positive attitude and proven customer service skills. Full role‑specific training is provided before you join and continues throughout your assignment on board.

Is product or destination knowledge important?

Yes, but you don’t need to know everything before you apply. Cruise sales team members learn about ships, itineraries and loyalty benefits, while shore experiences team members learn destination information and tour operations. Full training is provided so you can feel confident in your knowledge.

Is this a suitable first job at sea?

Yes. These roles are suitable for first‑time ship crew. Many people start their cruise ship careers in shore experiences or cruise sales and are supported with training, coaching and onboard guidance.

What does a typical day look like in shore experiences or cruise sales?

Both roles are highly guest‑focused, but the day‑to‑day responsibilities differ:

Cruise sales:
You’ll speak with guests about future holidays, explain loyalty benefits, promote exclusive onboard offers and help guests book their next P&O Cruises holiday.

Shore experiences:

Where will I interact with guests on board?

You’ll typically interact with guests at your department’s dedicated desk, during presentations or event, and at times while moving around the ship as part of guest‑facing activities.

How guest‑focused are these cruise ship roles?

Both roles involve frequent guest interaction. Cruise sales focuses on understanding guest needs and recommending future holidays, while shore experiences  supports guests before, during and after port days.

Will I need to meet performance targets?

Cruise sales team members work towards individual and team sales targets. Shore experiences team members work to operational and guest satisfaction standards, particularly on busy port days. Both teams receive training, coaching and performance support.

Do these teams work with other departments on the ship?

Yes. Both departments work closely with guest services. Cruise sales also partners with shoreside marketing and revenue teams, while shore experiences works closely with port teams and approved local tour providers.

What training will I receive before and during my contract?

You’ll receive comprehensive, role‑specific training before joining your ship, followed by ongoing coaching throughout your assignment. Training covers systems, guest service standards, destination knowledge and sales techniques where relevant.

Is there career progression in shore experiences or cruise sales?

Yes. High‑performing team members can progress into senior or management roles within their department. Many also move into other guest‑facing or operational roles on board.

Can working on board help me move into a shore‑based career?

Absolutely. Cruise ship experience builds valuable skills in customer service, communication, operations and sales. These skills are highly transferable to shore‑based roles across travel, tourism, sales and customer experience.
