Bex – Assistant Manager, Production Automation

Responsible for automation as part of the Production team, Bex is passionate about making sure our theatre shows wow audiences. He’s also recently been promoted to Production Manager.

What is the role of an Assistant Manager Production – Automation?

Automation is to operate the automation rigging system and call all the production shows in the safest and most efficient matter. I also assist the Production Manager with any operational matters that might occur and help other members of the team all around the ship.

What you do on a typical day?

My typical day starts with a walk around the ship to check all the venues and that everything is working and up to our high standards. Then after that, I complete all the checks in the theatre and get ready for rehearsal. After rehearsal, I check in with the Production Manager to support with anything they need.

After a break I get ready for the shows in the evening. In between the shows I walk around the ship checking in with team to see how they are doing and if they need anything. After the shows, we prepare the theatre for the next day.

As a team we like to relax together – the crew facilities include a swimming pool, whirlpool spas, pool tables, dart boards, table football and video games so there is plenty to do to unwind.

What do you love about the role?

I love that we can positively influence shows with suggestions on ways to make them even better than they already are – our aim is to make them the best they can be for our guests so that they have an incredible experience. I also get great satisfaction from helping others learn and develop their skills to support their career development.

What skills and attributes do you need to be great at this job?

You need the technical experience, but leadership qualities are also important, plus accountability, communication, flexibility and problem-solving. The most important for this type of role is attention to detail because the details separates us from the rest.

What is it about P&O Cruises that you love?

I like the empowerment to think for ourselves and use our knowledge and skills to contribute to the whole entertainment team. Everybody, no matter who they are or what team they are part of, is approachable and helpful.

If you want to work at sea in entertainment, P&O Cruises is the place to be; no company can compare to it!

What do you enjoy about life on board?

The camaraderie! Everybody helps each other out and you genuinely feel cared for by the team.

Do you have a favourite port?

My favourite port is Yokohama Japan. Japan is so beautiful and an amazing country. I am looking forward to visiting it again.

What are your next career steps?

I have just recently been promoted to Production Manager and will soon be starting the role on one of our new ships.
