Making waves, not waste: our beach clean heroes

Our ships journey across the world’s most breathtaking oceans, and with that privilege comes a profound responsibility, to preserve and protect our incredible marine environment. In celebration of World Oceans Day on 8 June, Azura organised a beach clean, showcasing our commitment to marine conservation.

20 crew members descended on Marsaxlokk beach in Malta. In just two hours, they cleared 40,000m² of coastline, collecting an impressive 250kg of waste. This was made possible through partnership with the ‘Coast is Clear Foundation’ and MBL Malta Cruise Services.

Yearlong dedication ship and shore

These efforts are just a snapshot of our ongoing commitment:

  • Global crew power: Crew from Britannia, Ventura, Iona, Queen Victoria, Aurora, and Azura have now conducted seven beach cleans this year across the globe, from St Kitts to Helsinki, contributing a massive 354 volunteer hours.
  • Shoreside success: Our teams at Carnival UK head office in Southampton have completed five cleans this year across Goatee Beach, Netley Abbey, and Lee-on-Solent, clearing over 100,000m² and collecting over 100kg of waste.

Sean Graham, Environmental Officer aboard Britannia, perfectly captured the spirit: “Voluntary work of this nature provides an immediate impact on the beaches we visit, reducing pollution risks to marine life. Everyone had a wonderful time – the spirit of the work was greatly fulfilling, and there was a tremendous sense of team spirit as we worked and laughed together.”

Vice President of Sustainability Sophie Portlock said:

The oceans are our home, and it is our responsibility to minimise our impact in them. I am so pleased to see so many of our colleagues both ship and shoreside volunteering their time to participate in beach cleans. Without the oceans, we wouldn’t exist, so protecting them and marine life is non-negotiable.”
