Life on board, working in a career on a cruise ship with P&O Cruises

Life on board

As a member of our ship’s company you’ll find a great range of facilities for you on board. As you’ll be living, sleeping and socialising on board, as well as working, we aim to provide facilities to make your new home and experience comfortable and enjoyable.

Cabins

You’ll be allocated a comfortable cabin, with a television and a phone and also shared or private toilet/shower facilities. Many colleagues share cabins and in these cases, cabin mates usually work in the same department. So it’s a great way to start making friends. Your cabin will be quite compact and storage space is limited, so take this in to account when packing. If sharing, you’ll need to be considerate as you may have conflicting work schedules and be resting at different times.

Smoking is not allowed in your cabin. Please only smoke in designated areas.

The mess

All of our ships have a crew mess and an officer’s mess where you will have a wide range of delicious and healthy meals prepared for you from a variety of cultures.

Your mess will be open at various times during the day. Your line manager will ensure that your breaks fit around the mess opening hours.

Ship’s company lounge

It’s essential you have down time and after your shift you may wish to relax in the ship’s company lounge. It’s a great place to soclialise and meet up with your colleagues for a coffee or a snack.

Our lounges typically offer televisions, a sound system, video games and a dance floor. It’s cash-free, so once you’ve set up your account, just show your laminex to deduct any purchases from your account.

The gym

If you like to keep fit then you’ll want to use the gym! It’s equipped with various cardio machines and weights, so remember to pack your workout gear.

Outside deck space

Every ship has an outside space for colleagues to use. It’s an area where you can go to relax and enjoy the sea air.

Self-service lauderettes

There are washing machines and dryers on board for you to use, as well as irons and ironing boards. These facilities are free to use. You can buy washing powder on board or bring your own.

Seafarers’ welcome committee

The Seafarer’s Welfare Committee (SWC) exists to make life more enjoyable for everyone off-duty. They organise fun activities on and off the ship – including barbeques, discos and football matches.
