My first day on board in a career on a cruise ship with P&O Cruises | Cruise Jobs & Careers

My first day on board

We’re looking forward to welcoming you on board. The main focus for your first day will be to introduce you to the ship and your new role, and to help you to find your way around and meet your colleagues. It can be a daunting time but we’re all here to help so please don’t be nervous.

Arriving at the port terminal

Check your joining instructions to see what time you need to arrive at the terminal, this is usually 09:00 unless your joining instructions say otherwise. Head to the Crew Pass Office in the terminal, or the temporary desk set up by the Crew Services Team – they will help you complete your paperwork and organise your temporary pass. Once completed, an experienced colleague will take you through security and on to the ship.

On board

Once you’re on board your line manager (or member of your team) will show you your cabin and workplace. Your line manager will explain the tasks and duties you have on your first day, such as your induction, role familarisation and emergency procedures. They will be your main point of contact throughout your contract and are there to support you and help you adjust to the routine of ship life.

Safety inductions

On your first day, you’ll attend a safety induction, led by one our safety trainers. This covers how to stay safe on board and what to do in an emergency. We know there is a lot of information to take in so please don’t be afraid to ask questions – everyone’s safety is our top priority.

Your ID card (Laminex)

Every member of our ship’s company is issued with a security ID card, known as your laminex. Your laminex will be scanned each time you get on and off the ship. Your laminex will also be your cabin key and you will top it up with money to make any purchases onboard so you will want to take good care of it! If you lose your laminex, please report it to the security office as soon as possible.

Questions

We know that there is a lot to learn if this is your first time at sea. Please ask any questions. We all want you to feel at ease and at home quickly; your colleagues, line manager, any member of the ship’s company will be happy to help.
